This weekend the majority of family members from Joel’s Dad’s side of the family met together at Joel’s Grandmother’s beach cabin on the Oregon coast to celebrate the completion of some renovation projects and to commemorate the memorial wall in honor of “Granddad” George Meyers.
This beach cabin has been in the family for 50 years. Some repairs and upgrades had become quite needed, and this was a project that Joel’s Dad and Grandma had overseen for the last couple of years. With a foundation installed under the house, new siding, a new roof, an extra bathroom, new floors throughout, and many other upgrades, the cabin is now in great shape for years to come – even in the harsh weather conditions of Oregon’s coast.
Having so much of the family together was a delight! Every time we all get together, there are new additions to family with marriages and babies! It’s fun to see our growing family.
The day consisted of a communal lunch followed by time for napping or playing on the beach. The weather was great and most of us found our way down there to play.
After the beach time was over, we all gathered in the living room of the cabin for the dedication ceremony.
Grandma shared her remarks to start the ceremony
We also heard from Steve, Dan (Joel’s Dad), and Jennie.
Steve recounting the time when the family lived here in the 70s
Dan talking about the details of the construction project recently completed
Jennie presenting the Memorial Wall
Christine telling one of the fun family memories: The time that she brought horses to the cabin. Deer got into the pen where the horses were kept and freaked the horses out, so they ran down the road and far down the beach before she caught up to them.Hannah recounting the story of when she was convinced that she and Austin nearly hit a moose while driving to the cabin late one night. Granddad got a real kick out of that… especially since there are not moose on the Oregon Coast. The large animal must have been an elk.Anna telling one of the funny stories from some of the earlier days when the cabin wasn’t sealed properly and bats entered the cabin, scaring our family staying there over spring break many years agoAt all the funny stories……laughs were had by all…… but especially by Grandma!
Alec handing out song sheets for the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness” to end the ceremony
All 7 (so far!) Great Grandkids! Many more great conversations — and more fun memories — were shared over dinnerThe final formal part of the evening was a moment to congratulate Alec on his high school graduation and achievement of becoming an Eagle Scout. Congratulations, Alec! Granddad would have been so proud!
